What makes taxes moral?

Taxes have always been politically fractious.
Indeed, anger over unfair and extractive taxation fuelled much of the revolutionary fervour of the eighteenth century.
But these days, aspirational individualism and the near total dismantling of the post-war welfare state in the West have eroded the bedrock of solidarity on which taxation is based.
Are there moral principles that should guide our thinking about just and equitable taxation? Or are resentment and avoidance the only responses of our modern society?
